Story
: (from website)
In 1850's Appalachia, 10-year-old Cadi feels responsible for her little sister's death, so she searches out the one man she feels can take away her sin - The Sin Eater. But in her quest for redemption, Cadi uncovers a dark secret that threatens to divide her family and community. Ultimately, Cadi shows them the truth in Jesus, reminding us that the human condition is beyond human remedy: only Christ provides for the absolution of sin.

Technical Info:
Some scenes involving violence/blood, death, may be upsetting to very young children, but much less graphic than what you might see on television.

Angela's Take:
It seems like I had noticed this book in a Christian bookstore before and the title really stood out to me and made me somewhat curious. I was looking forward to seeing the film to find out what it was all about. I was surprised at how good the film was and while I would have wanted the salvation/redemption message to be a little more clear for those who are not familiar with Christianity, Jesus and the Gospel message, with my disappointment in some of the latest releases from Fox Faith, I was impressed that the message is there underneath it all, of course it would have to be as it is the entire point of the movie.
The Last Sin Eater
is about a young girl's journey toward forgiveness and redemption. She lives in a small Welsh community that believes when a person dies, in order for their peace, a sin eater must take the deceased person's sin onto himself through food and drink during a funeral ritual before burial. Cadi searches out the Sin Eater as she feels she can't wait for death to be forgiven for a large sin that weighs her down and in the processes disrupts a community, unravels it's dark secret and provides a way of redemption for all as Cadi finds out about Jesus, the only true "Sin Eater" who not only has actually taken her sins upon himself, but is the only one who can make her whole again.
The only objectionable content would be the violence, which I consider mild, possibly the funeral ritual in which the Sin Eater appears to be "grim reaper" like in his long black hooded robe and a nightmare that Cadi has involving the Sin Eater where he appears suddenly. Definately fine for ages 13 and older as the rating implies, for much younger viewers, I would consider their sensitivity and possibly screen the movie first.
In all, this is a wonderful film that I found to be quite entertaining and interesting, while they should have been more detailed about the parallel of the Sin Eater to Jesus, it did give the basic message that Jesus is the only one who can take our sins away and grant us forgiveness. You see the need that everyone has inside for Jesus coming out in the community's practice, the need for forgiveness before death, the pain of sin, the humanity and burden of the Sin Eater and of course eventually how Jesus is the only true Sin Eater. I highly recommend viewing this film which is available for rental at local Blockbuster stores.
